Comprehensive, illustrated guidebook on treks in the Annapurna region of Nepal that comes with a detailed foldout map. "The best trail guide (for the Annapurna Circuit)", recommends 'Backpacker' magazine. With over 25 maps (besides the foldout map at the back) and some 160 color photographs, the guide comes packed with exhaustive, day-by-day description of the Annapurna Circuit and Sanctuary trails. There is in addition practical advice on planning and budgeting the treks plus background reading on the varied peoples who live in the Annapurna region and an introduction to Tibetan Buddhism, the religion they mostly practice. The guidebook also has a chapter on the fascinating story of the 1950 epic French ascent of Annapurna I, the first 'eight-thousander' ever climbed.

Well, it's not terrible, but it leaves a lot to be desired. It describes the trail well, but the trail is the trail...not hard to follow. Not a ton of insight within the villages like some of the other books brought in our group, and the detail maps could be much better (there was one book with sketches that were amazing by Bryn Thomas). It is smaller than most which can be a plus, but its taller, like folded map size...and the map that comes with it is trash, trail has changed since it was created and it leaves off the side trails. Also, no info on Kathmandu or Pokhara, which should be mandatory.
If you arent all that worried about pre-planning from home, wait till you get to Thamel in Kathmandu and pick up a used guide book (this one included) for pennies on the dollar. My recommendation is "Trekking in the Annapurna Region" by Bryn Thomas. We used a 1999 version more than this book, and i think the 2011 version is due out soon.

Annapurna Trekking Map Complete Guide 2017 Paperback Partha S Banerjee 9788190327015 Books Reviews

Read it from cover to cover. Exellent for planning the Annapurna Circuit, Sanctuary with side treks.
What is most important has CURRENT (as of 2012- it is not a reprint of 1997info) status of the road beeing built and in conjuction with other guides (Trekking in the Annapurna Circuit including new NATT-trails with avoid the road" by Andrees de Ruiter) one can plan to either trek on the road (inhaling fumes, dust ) or taking alternative trails.
Lots of pictures, map (I laminated the big one that is included inside but there are also small maps on the pages for each part of the trail).Lots of cultural information and logistics. All on good paper in full color.
It would be nice if it icluded "how to hire porter, porter-guides, and guides" icluding more on "where and how".
Overall from what you can find on , Barnes and Nobles etc...the best.
The "Trekking in the Annapurna region" 5th edition supposed to be published 1.5 years ago but is not out yet and the older 4th verion does not include recent (BIG) developments related to construction of the roads.
So if you are new to the region this one is exellent to get started.
Great, easy to read map. I had my entire trek mapped out in minutes.
I used it all the time along Annapurna Circuit. Lots of maps, picks, good description of trails and side trails.
There is "Annapurna Atlas" same size 15 detailed maps....fantastic by the same author.
All other guides I put aside-this one is the only one you need (get the Atlas in Nepal for $6 and you are set)
I got the map with the book laminated ....not really needed ...the mini maps with each chapter are enough.
Hightly recomend.
A little old, but the book has a lot of good information. As for the map, you're better off with the National Geographic Annapurna Adventure Travel Map #3003. much more detailed.
This is the best guide I have seen of the area in general, especially the context of what you will encounter. The maps are also pretty good, compared to most I've seen, tho' I can't yet vouch for the accuracy of the extensive information mapped. (This matters because some maps, such as Nat Geo's are quite dated and missing some trails, while others have lots of info but also demonstrably have at least one large village mis-located by miles.)
Well, it's not terrible, but it leaves a lot to be desired. It describes the trail well, but the trail is the trail...not hard to follow.
